Soul Mystique met with disaster on stage at the recent Perth Royal Show. Audiences did not know at the time, but it's been a month now and the story is safe to be told...
Soul Mystique were a hit at the WA 2009 Perth Royal Show this year. The Eleaton Theatre, which holds approximately 450 pax per session, became a health hazard as crowds of over 600 people attempted to squeeze themselves to standing room only to catch their performances for the entire week. The media attention was outstanding, and as expected, the crowds were dazzled by this amazing duo. On the 7th day, however, after having performed 21 shows – Gavin sustained a rib injury during the show on stage.
Lydia : “It happened during the finale number ‘Dirty Boogie’ when Gavin threw me up into a lift. For those of you who’ve seen the show, this is the lift that looks rather dangerous where my head looks as though it’s going to hit the ground at 100km p/h. It’s fast, scary, and keeps the audience on edge, however, it’s also the exact lift that dislocated Gavin’s shoulder back in 2005! Call us gluttons for punishment, as you would think that one would remove this lift after an accident like that! Well we didn't (and we still won't) as we are insane...Anyway, this time, on the upward motion, we both heard a ‘crack’ and I saw the color drain from Gav’s face. Despite the pain, he managed to finish the show, then collapsed in the greenroom thereafter. At this point, we both wondered, ‘why on earth are we still doing this lift…and moreso, how are we going to get through tomorrow?!’ We had one day left with 3 shows to go - including one special seating for the Governor, plus a live telecast for WA Telethon! I insisted that the lift was removed immediately for the remaining shows, but Gavin refused & I had no choice but let him do his stuff.
The show must go on...It did, and nobody would have known that we were performing with a cracked rib! Right now, the boy is resting with a beer in hand…He lives up to the saying, The Show MUST Go on!"
